The Cervical Spine (the neck)

The neck is a highly evolved structure which helps not only to orientate our eyes but coordinate vast chains of neurological function. It is constantly giving feedback to your brain to help you perceive exactly where you are in space. This importance is critical for optimal brain body function. If you start to lose movement quality in your neck, not only can you start experiencing pain and stiffness, but you may start a decline in brain function.

What causes neck pain?

Typically neck dysfunction comes in slowly over time. It is analogous to a frog in boiling water. The temperature slowly increasing over time (the neck movement declining over time) and unaware the frog stays in not noticing, and it ends up boiling (suddenly you're in a world of pain).

  • Sharp catching pain on bending or turning? It's possible you've sprained a facet joint (not unlike an ankle sprain).

  • Hard to bend forward? Some pain going out into the shoulders or even arms? There may be an intervertebral disc tear or bulging creating inflammation and pressure on a nerve.
